Hummingbird House is a brand new casita with panoramic mountain views, located just outside the art mecca of Santa Fe, New Mexico
—an inclusive and diverse state known for its history, culture, and natural beauty. The neighborhood is a dark sky community with no street lights and plentiful wildlife—and only a fifteen-minute drive from the historic Plaza downtown, plentiful cultural opportunities, including the internationally famous folk art museum contemporary arts museums and countless galleries, and innovative experiences like Meow Wolf. Guests have described it as “wilderness, but with Trader Joe’s.”
The Casita
Meaning “little house” in Spanish, Hummingbird House is six-hundred square feet, ADA-accessible, with brand new, state of the art everything. Built for Jeffe’s aging mother, for the time when she’s ready to move in, the casita is beautifully designed for one person – or two who are happy being cozy. Situated to take advantage of the striking views down Galisteo Basin to the Ortiz Mountains and Sandia peak, the casita boasts a south- and west-facing wrap around portal (covered porch) with sunrise to sunset vistas. A bistro table with chairs, lounger, and rocking chairs allow for sun-chasing or shadow-seeking.
Inside, the kiva fireplace, Saltillo tile, and authentic vigas give that northern New Mexico vibe. The kitchen comes with a half-fridge, convection hot plate, and toaster/microwave, plus a dishwasher and deep sink. A wall-mounted flat-screen smart TV allows for media consumption or can be used for a large laptop display. A Bluetooth keyboard, mouse, and smaller monitor are also available. The breakfast bar, couch, armchair, and desk provide multiple options for working and lounging. The bathroom shower is beautifully tiled with a banco (bench) for sitting, with a nearby hand-held shower wand, or a rainfall showerhead for standing. Big enough to accommodate two people, for those who enjoy sharing, the shower has been described as “sheer heaven.” The bedroom has a full-sized antique brass bed (cozy!), a walk-in closet with provided hangars and lots of storage, and a remote-controlled blackout shade. Big windows, skylights, and sliding glass doors throughout the house allow in plenty of light and allow for those phenomenal views to be enjoyed regardless of weather. Mini-splits provide both air conditioning and heat, with ceiling fans in the bedroom and living room.
Guests wishing to use the laundry facilities or oven in the main house can arrange with Jeffe to do so.
A dedicated parking area on the far side of the casita leads to a paved walk to the front door, allowing for guests to come and go discreetly and at will. Another walkway leads to the main house, for more social moments.
Best of all: your cat(s) are welcome guests! A catio is built in under the portal, with window access from inside. A kitty litterbox is hidden beneath the bathroom cabinet, accessible by a cat door with flap. Dogs or other pets are potentially welcome. Jeffe and her partner, David, have two Maine coon cats and a chocolate lab. Ask to discuss!
